Frequently asked questions about finding a Taxi in Malvern

Q - Are the Taxis on the Malvern Taxi Directory ‘Official’ and ‘Licensed’

A- Yes – They are all Licensed and regulated by Malvern Hills District Council. All vehicles on the directory will be either Private Hire or Hackney Carriage vehicles. Normally Private hire vehicles are used for executive trips (such as Airports) whilst Hackney carriage vehicles tend to work more locally.

Licensing by the Council includes criteria like CRB checks, Insurance, Road Worthiness (higher standards than ‘Normal’ MOT’s).

Additionally all of the companies listed on the Malvern Taxi Directory are respected and well established, some with over 15 years experience. No taxi (other than wheelchair accessible) can be older than 8 years old under the MHDC regulations.

Q - How many of us can go in one Taxi?

A - Most Taxis both Private Hire and Hackney Carriages are licensed to carry FOUR people, this inlcudes children and babies. Some companies operate seven seaters that can carry SIX people but these can be more expensive.

Q - How much will it cost?

A –  ‘On the meter’  trips mean the cost of the journey is measured by the in-taxi fixed meter. The tariff is set and monitored by Malvern Hills District Council and has three rates depending on, for example, the time of day (before midnight)  and whether it is a Sunday or Bank holiday.

For normal weekday trips between 7.00am and Midnight expect to pay around £3.50 for the first mile and £2.00 for each subsequent mile.

MHDC Tariff

Example fare; Central Malvern to Central Worcester weekdays after 7.00am and before Midnight will be around £20 (2012)

If you book with a Private Hire company you must ask for a price and that price is likely to be approximately the same as the ‘meter’ price for local trips. For longer trips (such as Airports) most companies have a set tariff  (look on their websites or ask) that lists the most common trips. Prices may vary however dependent on time of day and whether you are being dropped off or collected at the Airport. If you are being collected at the Airport check the policy the company has for meeting you, such as 'meet and greet' in the terminal building and if it is included in the price.

Q- Do all taxis have meters?

A – Hackney Carriages (taxis that are allowed to use the ‘Taxi Ranks’ ) must have a meter fitted. Licensed Private Hire vehicles have the option to have a meter fitted. If you are being collected at the Airport check the policy the company has for meeting you, such as 'meet and greet' in the terminal building.

Q – Can I negotiate on price?

A – Yes of course. However it is likely that individual companies will insist on the meter price for local trips as these prices are fair. This practice also means you will not be overcharged for a trip. If you feel you have been overcharged you should contact Malvern Hills District Council

For longer trips including Airport transfers most companies have a fixed tariff rate based on their individual business needs.  All companies listed on the Malvern Taxi Directory have very competitive long distance and Airport Tariffs.

Q- What is the difference between Hackney Carriages and Private Hire vehicles?

A – Both Private Hire and Hackney Carriages have to be licensed by the Council but  Hackney Carriage drivers must also undergo a local taxi knowledge test. The Hackney vehicles are also allowed to display roof signs and door signs and use the taxi ranks.

Q – If I book a taxi will they turn up?

A- Oh YES! All of the companies on the Malvern Taxi Directory depend on long term, good relationships with their customers and would not let them down without very good reason. In these rare cases each company would have contingency so you will still get to your destination.

Q - If I am not happy with any taxi company (even those not on the Malvern Taxi Directory) what should I do ?

A – Contact The Malvern Hills District Council at

Worcestershire Regulatory Services (Licensing)
Malvern Hills District Council, The Council House
Avenue Road, Malvern, Worcestershire WR14 3AF

Q – Do the taxis have child seats or booster seats?

A – This is at the discretion of the individual company. Some do and some don’t. Al are happy to take children and babies if the parent supplies a child seat. This is recommended for longer journeys. Ask the company you book with in advance if you are taking young children on long journeys.

Q – Should I tip the driver?

A – Only if you want to and are completely happy with the service and the driver!!
